    Dwell Time

    Dwell time in XR is the duration a user spent attending to or interacting with a specific object, surface or region inside a 3D scene.

    Dwell time is the spatial cousin of time-on-page. Combined with gaze direction and locomotion, it produces the attention layer of spatial heatmaps and is one of the primary signals used to surface friction in XR experiences.

    At the aggregate level, dwell time reveals which regions of a scene are meaningful — where users linger, where they orbit, where they simply pass through. At the session level, it exposes moments of hesitation and confusion, which is where AI XR analytics can prioritise fixes automatically.

    Why it matters

    Dwell time is one of the highest-signal metrics in XR analytics because it can be measured on every headset without eye-tracking hardware. It bridges the gap between attention (invisible) and interaction (rare), producing the middle layer where most immersive UX decisions are made.

    Example

    A museum VR experience shows an average dwell time of 45 seconds on a specific artefact. Comparing across cohorts, the team finds that visitors under 25 dwell less than 20 seconds; the associated audio narration is too long. Cutting the narration to 25 seconds equalises dwell across cohorts.
