Spatial Analytics
Spatial analytics is the analysis of user actions inside a 3D coordinate system, where position, orientation and proximity to objects are first-class signals.
Spatial analytics is the foundation of every XR analytics platform. Instead of asking 'which button was clicked', it asks 'where in the scene did this happen, from which angle, and for how long'. It is the only analytics model that survives when the UI moves with the user.
Spatial analytics assumes a coordinate frame per scene, and treats position, gaze direction, movement mode and proximity to objects as continuous streams. Aggregating those streams across many sessions produces spatial heatmaps, journey flows and behaviour signals that would be invisible in event-based analytics.
Why it matters
Spatial analytics is what separates XR measurement from web measurement. Every metric that matters for immersive UX — attention, hesitation, comfort, spatial completion — is defined in 3D space. Teams that try to reuse web analytics vocabularies (funnels, bounce rate) miss the questions their designers actually ask, and end up making decisions with the wrong evidence.
Example
A retail VR pilot uses spatial analytics to overlay a heatmap on the store layout. Two aisles concentrate 68% of gaze time but zero interactions — a strong signal that products are visible but the pickup affordance is not readable from that distance. The team moves the interaction volume and re-tests.
